Yes. There is no cost for students or mentors to participate in CanMMP.
CanMMP is open to students in any year of study who are currently enrolled at a Canadian medical school. Premedical students and students attending medical schools outside Canada are not currently eligible.
No. Students who are still exploring their interests are welcome to apply. You may identify multiple specialties or describe the broader goals you would like to explore with a mentor.
Yes. You may optionally indicate preferences related to language, lived experience, identity or personal background. CanMMP will consider these preferences, but specific mentor characteristics cannot be guaranteed and remain subject to availability.
Matching timelines depend on the application cycle, mentor availability and the preferences listed in your application. Matches for the upcoming cycle will be released during winter and spring 2027. Applicants will receive further information about timelines after applying.
We recommend sending a courteous follow-up message, as mentors may have demanding clinical schedules. If communication cannot be established or repeatedly breaks down, contact CanMMP for assistance.
Either the student or mentor may end the relationship if the match is no longer suitable. Contact CanMMP so the relationship can be formally closed and the team can discuss possible next steps. A new match may be considered but cannot be guaranteed.
Yes. Students may apply in a future matching cycle, provided their previous CanMMP mentorship relationship has formally ended.
Mentors and mentees are expected to treat their conversations with appropriate confidentiality, subject to applicable legal, ethical and professional obligations. Participants should never share identifiable patient information during mentorship discussions.
No. CanMMP facilitates mentorship relationships but does not directly provide research positions, electives, reference letters or residency interviews. Mentors may offer general guidance about pursuing these opportunities, but they are not expected to provide them, and participation does not guarantee access to them.
